Landscaping Environmental Project

Students from the Landscaping Program planted approximately 1100 wild Lupine and New Jersey Tea at Turner’s Falls Municipal Airport June 1st and 2nd ,  2009.   This is the fourth year that LAH has been involved in the project with Baystate Environmental Corporation, Inc. of East Longmeadow.  Students began the project by heat treating wild seed provided by BEC in January.  The germinated seed are grown in the greenhouse until June when the plants are placed in the field as part of a re-vegetation project.  Turner’s Falls airport will be undergoing construction that will impact the native population of Lupines and New Jersey Tea.  Both plants are critical to the survival of butterfly species in the area.

Landscaping/Horticulture Program Community Service Project Spring 2009

The Landscape Technology/Horticulture Program at Career TEC completed a community service project at the Meadow Brook Elementary School in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts May 18th to 28th, 2009.  Students from the program removed weeds, trimmed trees and shrubs, and spread 30 yards of bark mulch under the supervision of Dan Plourde (instructor), Doreen Angelucci (technical assistant), and Angela Silvestri (individual aide).  The work performed was a collaborative effort with students from  Putnam Vocational High School Horticulture  supervised by Vicki Toro, and Joe Bryda.  The Meadow Brook  PTO provided the mulch while students from both vocational schools provided the labor and expertise to rejuvenate the school entrance area.
